Blackhall Cricket Club Crushes the Competition at 4th Annual East Durham Poker Team Event!
The cards have been dealt, the chips have fallen, and the dust has settled on the 4th Annual East Durham Poker Team Event, held this past Saturday. And emerging victorious, with a truly impressive display of skill, strategy, and perhaps a little bit of cricketing luck, was Blackhall Cricket Club!
The powerhouse trio of Paul Gorton, Joshua Bell, and Wayne Jones collectively amassed an astounding 158 points, leaving their opponents in a trail of discarded aces and busted flushes. Each member of the triumphant team has earned a coveted COCF25 (Champions of Champions 2025) seat in December, proving that their poker prowess is as sharp as a perfectly bowled bouncer.
For Wayne Jones, this marks his second COCF25 seat, leading some to whisper that he might just be a robot disguised as a human, programmed solely for poker domination.
"I`m absolutely thrilled," beamed Wayne, wiping a tear of joy (or perhaps chip dust) from his eye. "We trained hard, we studied the `Art of the Fold` handbook, and frankly, Josh just has a ridiculous poker face. You never know what he`s holding."
Joshua Bell, ever the stoic, simply nodded and murmured, "Calculated risk, optimal execution."
Coming in a commendable second place, with a respectable 142 points, was the aptly named Hated Adored Never Ignored, featuring the formidable trio of Kyle Watson, David Fisher, and Connor McManus. They fought valiantly, proving that while they may be hated, adored and ignored, they certainly aren`t ignored at the felt.
"We gave it our all," grumbled Kyle Watson, seemingly still haunted by a questionable river card. "Next year."
Rounding out the top three, with 124 points, were The Bluff Daddies, comprising Nathan Baars, Adam Harding, and, in a surprising turn of events, the very man who organized the whole shindig, Tournament Director Chris Maddison.
Conspiracy theories about Maddison subtly influencing the card shuffles were immediately and vehemently denied, though a few players were seen giving him the side-eye.
"It`s a tough job being both the director and a competitor," chuckled Maddison, attempting to look innocent. "My only advantage was knowing exactly when to call for a pint (and food) break. Strategic hydration, you know."
But the night wasn`t just about team glory. The individual champion of the evening was none other than Fergal Meladey, who also snagged a coveted COCF25 seat for his outstanding individual performance. When asked for comment, Meladey simply winked.
Looking ahead, the East Durham Poker organizers have announced some exciting changes for next year`s tournament. Expect a better points structure, including juicy points for "kills" (i.e., knocking out other players) and even higher points for those who make it to the coveted final table. This promises to inject even more intensity and strategic depth into what is already a thrilling event.
"We want to reward aggressive play and skillful navigation to the final stages," explained a serious (for once) Chris Maddison. "It`s going to be a bloodbath… in the most polite and poker-appropriate way possible, of course."
